Thy Will Be Done.

It was only when I accepted Jesus into my heart that I began to discover God’s will for my life. This was the beginning of the most amazing relationship which I’ve ever embarked on. Layer by layer, the Lord peeled back all that He had in store for me but I had to make a commitment. I needed to establish trust by turning everything over to Him without hesitation. All control had to be relinquished and my will surrendered. It was no longer about taking matters into my own hands and feeling like I had no one in my corner. Instead, I voluntarily chose to step aside and allow Jesus to lead me and I haven’t looked back.

Like with any relationship, I made an effort to spend time with God to know Him better. That means sitting with Him in silence, reading the Bible, praying, playing worship music and just always being aware of His presence. I keep it real with the Lord because He already knows my heart better than I do. Despite His holiness, I never have to hide or pretend to be anyone other than who I am and that’s beautiful. If I’m feeling shitty, I say so. God stands for all truth therefore if I’m honest then He is more than eager to reveal Himself. In spite of the hardships, He has a desired purpose to fulfill if we are willing to abide.

Isaiah 55:8-9. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

The Lord’s will can be divided into various segments which include but are not limited to:

Predestined/Sovereign Will: the eternal, foreordained plan and purpose of God which cannot be changed

Moral Will: how He intends for us to live such as in the 10 Commandments

Circumstantial Will: His plan within certain situations for when we mess up

Discerned Will: how we follow His guidance through the application of principles from the Bible for when there is no clear direction

God has a will for everyone and He challenges us to obey Him, no matter what. Is this an easy thing to do? No, I struggle with some of the things that I need to endure in order for His will to be done. The most challenging part is waiting on His timing. He does it for very good reason and that is to set up the circumstances, purify our motives and trust Him but it’s still an arduous process. Getting stretched to the limit in the dark times and digging deeper into my belief is also a part of His will. The muscle of faith cannot be strengthened without resistance and that’s what trips us up the most. Purposefully, this life was not designed to be easy and pain-free. In fact, God guarantees that we will be met with opposition and He has graciously offered His invaluable assistance. If we choose to operate under His grace then we will be sanctified through and through.

Proverbs 3:5-6. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

When we walk in His will, there will be an undeniable sense of peace with no crowding in the heart and mind. Unlike with people, there is absolutely no confusion or inconsistency with God. If we’re prepared to do the right thing then He is faithful to instruct us in the way we should go. For this reason, it’s imperative to get into the Word so that we are not shaken but firmly rooted. God is involved in all the details no matter how insignificant they may appear. It is wise to confirm His will and this can be easily done by referring to the Bible to determine if this is in agreement with what He wants. God is pure and true therefore He will never sway us into anything dishonoring because that would tarnish His character and render Him unholy.

Sin has seared the conscience therefore we need the Bible to filter and purify us. The Lord always speaks directly to the spirit when we immerse ourselves into His Word. It takes time and patience because a lifelong relationship is being formed. But this won’t work if you’re unwilling to turn away from the contaminated, corrupted ways of the world. No one escapes from the consequences of their choices regardless of their (un)belief so it’s best to keep your morality in check.

The posture of one’s heart is key to receive the Good News in order to make adequate use of it. Once we step into His will and make a concerted effort to stay there, the Lord rejoices. God will lavishly pour His blessings and be your greatest protector. As believers, we can be wholeheartedly confident that He is always working even in the worst of times. As we go through the fire, He will gladly sand, sift and sculpt us.

Romans 8:28. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Jeremiah 29:11-13. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

Jesus healed individuals one-at-a-time because God has a personal interest in each person. The Lord has graciously extended an invitation to everyone for adoption into His kingdom. Since we’ve been given free will, He leaves the ball in our court.

Colossians 1:9. For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives.
