The Pursuit Of Peace.

A follower of Jesus isn’t guaranteed a problem-free life. Quite the contrary because God requests that we operate on a level which is not earthly.

Romans 12:2. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

This sounds great but it’s a whole other song and dance when we are called to apply this principle to reality. Since we function in the physical realm, we are inundated with a multitude of afflictions. There are many distractions which arrive in the form of information, people, circumstances, emotions, thoughts and so on. Clearly, there isn’t a shortage of shots which are aimed to threaten our survival. The pressures of this world are bountiful and infinite therefore it’s a highly advantageous investment to reinforce our faith.

Proverbs 14:30. A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.

We place a heavy emphasis on the pursuit of happiness but peace is where it’s at. All fine and good to be happy but much like any other emotion, it is temporary and fleeting. The reason being is that if something happens to rob us of that enjoyment then we are automatically switched over to a sense of lack. Sadly, we cannot place our peace on things which can be taken away such as loved ones, health, material possessions, etc. But if we cultivate a garden of everlasting peace then we are not disheartened by the storms. Simply said, if we don’t have peace then we will have conflict. This is detrimental to the quality of our lives because such vulnerability exposes us to never-ending torment.

Peace is a precious, eternal gift which we receive by faith from Jesus Christ. Once we have complete trust and dependence that God is in control then we can prayerfully minimize our daily concerns. The sobering truth is that we are in control of very little in relation to what we’re up against. The adoption of a “hope for the best” mentality just won’t cut it because there is nothing to sustain us during a disturbance. Without a focus on the promises of God, we are diverted to zero-in and magnify the problems. The bottom line is that it’s impossible to operate under the shadow of fear and experience peace.

The Lord has more than sufficiently equipped His children to whatever they’ve been called to face. Almighty God has not abandoned us as orphans in the middle of nowhere. That is not the will of our faithful Father who created us in His image.

Psalm 34:14. Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

The key operative words are seek and pursue which means we are to play an active role in the attainment of peace. We cannot sit back and wait willy nilly to have peace present itself on a platter to us. It’s an intentional pursuit that is void of passivity because we are to desire the ongoing fulfillment of peace.

Many things are competing for our time and attention but we cannot afford to forfeit the price of peace.
